Cancelling or switching a policy without a gap

A gap of even a day can cause problems with registration, lenders and future paperwork.

The short version

  1. Start the new policy before you cancel the old one.
  2. Ask your old insurer about any refund or fees.
  3. Keep proof of coverage for the whole period.

Overlap on purpose

Choose a start date for the new policy that is on or before the end date of the old one. A short overlap is better than a gap.

Cancelling

Ask the old insurer how to cancel in writing and whether there are fees. Keep the confirmation.

Why gaps matter

Many states require continuous coverage on registered vehicles, and some lenders do too. A gap can also raise questions at your next application.

Update everyone who needs to know

  • Your lender, if you have one.
  • Your state motor vehicle agency, if it expects a notice.
  • Anyone who asked for a certificate of insurance.
